Coming from a small, rural village in Bangladesh to the campus of Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, Shamim Mohammad felt like an outsider in most areas of his college experience.
He felt that way until he took a step into the open house at Eta Theta Chapter and his life “was changed forever.”
Brother Mohammad was honored with Delta Sigma Pi’s 2024 Career Achievement Award during a reception at the 2026 South Central LEAD Provincial Conference in San Antonio. The Deltasig Career Achievement Award is presented to Delta Sigma Pi members
who have most distinguished themselves in business, government, or education, and through their accomplishments have furthered a higher standard of commercial ethics, culture, and the civic and commercial welfare of the community.
“I was an improbable candidate for a moment like this,” he said while accepting the award. “A young boy from a small rural village in Bangladesh. Who would have imagined this fact? I certainly would not have. But that’s exactly
the point of this Fraternity.
“Delta Sigma Pi exists to make the impossible, possible, and improbable, probable. To give young men and women and brothers a community — a network — a sense of purpose to say, you belong here. You have something to offer, and we will
walk this path with you. I’m living proof that it works.”
As the executive vice president, chief information and technology officer (CITO) at CarMax, Shamim oversees the strategic use of technology across the company, including digital innovations and product engineering, to deliver revenue-generating products
and solutions that drive competitive advantages. CarMax is a Fortune 200 company and a leader in the automotive retail, wholesale and finance industry.
In close partnership with other senior leaders, he led CarMax through a massive digital transformation in all areas of the business, including re-platforming all major technologies to create a digital backbone, developing world-class supply chain capabilities,
and leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence to power the business.
Mohammad began his career at a technology startup focusing on automating all aspects of small to mid-size retail businesses and has served in various diverse strategic leadership roles in startup organizations and Fortune 500 companies across the retail,
travel, hospitality, finance, and technology industries. Previously, he was the senior technology leader for marketing technology and data analytical startup TravelClick. At TravelClick, he created business intelligence and interactive digital media
products and technologies from the ground up, serving thousands of hotels around the world. TravelClick was sold in 2018 for $1.5 billion.
Prior to joining CarMax in 2012, Mohammad served as vice president of information and technology for BJ’s Wholesale, where he developed the company’s e-commerce platform, transformed supply chain and distribution capabilities, and advanced
data science practices.
In 2020, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Sloan selected him as the recipient of the CIO Leadership Award, which recognizes chief information officers who deliver exemplary levels of business value through the innovative use of technology.
This recognition is awarded to one recipient each year after a rigorous selection process of top technology leaders across the globe.
In 2021, he was featured by Forbes Magazine as one of the top 50 CIOs in the nation who are redefining the role and driving game-changing innovation. In 2024, Mohammad was inducted into the CIO Hall of Fame by the CIO Magazine.
He earned his master’s in business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and bachelor of science in computer science from Angelo State University. He is a registered CPA in the state of Illinois.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors for United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) and several nonprofit boards.
