Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo Makes a Difference for Mental Health

Nov 22, 2019 – Kappa Mu recently volunteered with the Transitions Mental Health Association.

Transitions Mental Health Association is a non-profit organization serving San Luis Obispo and North Santa Barbara counties, dedicated to eliminating stigma and promoting recovery and wellness for people struggling with mental health through work, housing, community and family support services.

The chapter volunteered at the organization's Growing Grounds in San Luis Obispo, a plant nursery that helps those struggling with mental health to find and maintain employment through horticultural therapy and vocational training. The nursery sells plants to the public supporting those who are employed there.

According to Carolyn Lidster, Kappa Mu's VPCS, "We volunteered at the nursery and worked alongside the employees struggling with mental health, and learned about stigmas that exist in our society. In the beginning of this event, we were told about the importance of this nursery and how it benefits the community of San Luis Obispo. We spent the remainder of the event helping with the nursery by trimming olive trees, reorganizing the rows of plants and helping to remove excess scraps and branches from the nursery."
