OXFORD— The evening before Miami University’s career fair, Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi hosted a panel Q&A session for collegians and recruits, and the chapter also hosted a networking reception.
This panel Q&A included representatives from American Greetings, Terillium, Protiviti, National Interstate Insurance, and Baxalta. In total more than 150 brothers and recruits were in attendance for this session. Since these employers were also at Miami’s career fair, those in attendance gained extra exposure to the recruiters.
The chapter also hosted 17 companies for a networking reception. The event helped settle the nerves for more than 50 brothers who had the chance to meet with representatives before the career fair. Companies in attendance included: Deloitte, American Greetings, The Hackett Group, 84.51, Ernst & Young, and twelve others. The reception lasted for an hour and a half, and included food and refreshments for guests.
VALPARASIO, Ind.—Kappa Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi at Valparasio University co-sponsored an event on campus that helped prepare students for interviews and the professional world.
Chapter members gave advice on how to dress for an interview and JCPenny provided sample clothing. They also taught people how to tie a tie. More than 500 students attended this event and brothers were able to connect and help many of them. For future events, the chapter would like to expand their reach by teaching about grooming and etiquette.
SAN DIEGO—Iota Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi at San Diego State University hosted the Assistant Dean of the College of Business Tita Gray, San Diego State, who gave a presentation on leadership.
Brother Gray discussed the difference between a leader and a manager. Gray also covered how culture impacts a leader, and she provided a suggested reading list for learning more about leadership. More than 40 members attended and enjoyed this event where they were able to meet Tita, one of many faculty initiates. In total San Diego State has initiated 17 faculty members. This was also a great opportunity for the 15 recruits to meet Tita.
Iota Pi also recently held a successful professional event with Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s Monte Wylie, a Talent Acquisition Specialist for one of our career partners. Wylie provided information about Enterprise’s entry-level Management Training Program, and he gave advice on which attributes are necessary for the program--good communication and determination. More than 20 members attended this session that was more than just learning about the rotational program. The session was engaging, fun and geared for an audience of soon-to-be business professionals.
ATHENS, Ga.—Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi at the University of Georgia hosted a professional event for chapter members and students in the Terry Business School.
While many companies’ recruiters were there, finance and MIS majors were the most heavily sought after. In the future they look to expand this event from large firms to smaller boutique firms looking for the same, high quality student.
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Ryan Buustra, Western Michigan, spoke to more than 50 students from the College of Business at Western Michigan University on behalf of the Epsilon Omicron Chapter and three additional student organizations.
Members of Deltasig, Phi Chi Theta, and APICS promoted the event in their classes and promotional flyers were distributed. Buustra presented on working for Whirlpool and about achieving success in his professional career. This was accompanied by Jessica Green’s, Western Michigan, reflection on how Delta Sigma Pi helped her succeed as an internship at Whirlpool. Presentations were also given by alumni of the other student organizations.
ORLANDO—Xi Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi at Florida International University and Zeta Phi Chapter at Florida Atlantic University hosted Daymond John of Shark Tank to speak about entrepreneurship in today’s business world.
More than 500 people attended the open to the public, sponsored event moderated by Donovan Campbell. Xi Omega chose the questions for Daymond and then the floor was opened to the audience for questions. Despite the great attendance, the chapter plans to promote similar events even more in the future, and it also plans host large-scale events outside of welcome week.
IOWA CITY—Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi at Iowa University hosted a private career fairs with 12 companies.
In total, nearly 75 members and pledges networked with the representatives from those companies who were looking for interns. Some representatives were alumni who were thrilled to connect with the collegians and set-up interviews with them. This event was a great opportunity for collegians to develop networking skills, and for upperclassman to mentor younger members on how to get internships. When this event is held again, the chapter hopes to expand it to even more companies.
ORLANDO—Over the course of a year, Xi Omega Chapter held an online fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Hospital that culminated with campus’ Up ‘Til Dawn event. The chapter set-up games and activities for more than 300 people who attended the student-led and student-run philanthropic program that benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Everyone enjoyed coming together for a good cause. Food stands were also set up by the chapter, with options for all hours including burgers, fried oreos and breakfast foods.
MINNEAPOLIS—Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi held a fall social event at Minnetonka Orchards. In total, 18 brothers and nine pledges picked apples, took hay rides, navigated a corn maze, and played with animals at the petting zoo. They also enjoyed live music, apple donuts and the orchard’s famous cider! The chapter chose to have a social event at the orchard because of the variety of activities, and the beautiful fall colors in Minnetonka, Minn. They were able to spend some quality time getting to know the pledges, which was a goal of the event. The chapter has more activities planned for this fall including a DSP Donut Crawl and a trip to one of Minnesota's scariest haunted houses!
CINCINNATI—Alpha Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi at the University of Cincinnati hosted a grill out in the Lindner College of Business courtyard in conjunction with the College of Business freshman convocation/orientation.
Members welcomed the freshman to the university, served food and promoted the chapter’s upcoming recruitment week events. Flyers were also distributed. During this event, 12 Deltasigs were able to reach 200 prospective recruits in one afternoon. The chapter looks forward to sponsoring this event in the future.
ST. CLOUD, Minn.—Theta Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi at St. Cloud State University celebrated their 45th anniversary at Centennial Hall.
The reunion included lunch and a presentation of the chapter’s history followed by the opportunity for alumni to share their favorite Deltasig memories. There was also a Delta Sigma Pi memorabilia give away and campus tours. Chapter archives were displayed, including scrapbooks and The DELTASIG magazine dating back to 1970 when the chapter was chartered. Collegians and alumni enjoyed the celebration and they set a great foundation for celebrating their golden anniversary in 2020.
