Business SOS!: Richard Sierra’s Advice for Brothers

Aug 09, 2023 – Richard Sierra, Tampa (FL), shares about the reality of practicing law and teaches small business owner’s how best to succeed.

Richard’s book, Business SOS!: Eight Common Legal Mistakes Business Owners Make and How to Avoid Them, was released in January to help small business owners with the legal side of their organizations. He has over eighteen years of experience practicing law and is the founder and CEO of Florida Small Business Legal Center.

As a small business owner, Sierra spoke of the need for a book that prepares people before they delve into business. He found the same legal problems repeated over and over with his clients. “The more prepared business owners are, the better they’re going to be at running their businesses,” he said. “If they had legal advice before they came to me, perhaps the problem could have been avoided.”

Richard credits his time as a collegiate member with Epsilon Rho as his first exposure to business. “This a business of contacts. Any connections you can make by utilizing Deltasig, I encourage brothers to use it, whether it’s an alumni network or through a local chapter. Take advantage of that,” he said.

Sierra had the following advice for brothers looking to start a small business: “Every business has risks. There’s no such thing as going into business without taking risks. You will have to take risks; the decision is what risks are you willing to take.”

He graduated from University of Tampa with a bachelor’s of science in marketing in 1986 and earned his juris doctor from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law in 2002. Before entering the legal field, Richard was the founder and CEO of one of the first U.S. online recruiting tools, Healthcare Recruitment Online, which he sold in 2004.
