Des Moines-Central Iowa Volunteers To Make A Difference

Dec 07, 2016 – The Des Moines-Central Iowa Alumni Chapter took part in community service work at Drake University for Make A Difference Day.
Five brothers volunteered with countless others to clean up the Drake University (IA) Stadium after the annual Reggie's Sleepout event. Several members of Alpha Iota Chapter at Drake (IA) were also in attendance.

Reggie's Sleepout is an annual fundraising event to raise money for Iowa Homeless Youth Centers where hundreds of people gather on the football field and sleep in cardboard boxes, tents and sleeping bags to raise awareness and funds to support youth and childhood homelessness.

The volunteers spent the next morning breaking down cardboard boxes used to construct shelters on the football field and loading other materials onto garbage/recycling trucks.

Jody Dierickx and Nathan Wagner (Des Moines - Central Iowa Alumni Chapter members) help clean up after Reggie's Sleepout.

Reggie's Sleepout is named after a young man named Reggie Kelsey who in 2001 aged out of the foster care system in Iowa and passed away three and a half months later while he was camped by the Des Moines River. On average the event raises anywhere between $100,000 and $140,000 to benefit homeless youth.

If your chapter participated in a Make A Difference Day event, please submit a summary and high-res photos to magazine@dsp.org.
